A 40 child centre required in 12 weeks from start of documentation to occupation. Close consultation and cooperation between the client, contractor, council and architect allowed the customised demountable building to be built off site while council & docs processed the necessary approvals. The building was delivered to site in 8 parts once approval was granted and then the outdoor play space and climbing frame were installed and completed, all by the due date.
The design transformed an old asphalt carpark into a new landscaped outdoor play area to adjoin the demountable facilities. Suspected asbestos below the asphalt and the tight timeframe meant leaving the asphalt in place. After consultation with an arborist, a combination of raised permeable decks and landscaping were constructed over the asphalt. The project was integrated into the existing landscape by using prefabricated timber play decks and equipment designed to be arranged around the existing trees. The decks connect the indoor and outdoor play spaces and allowed the trees to breath. The design maximises the use of natural light and ventilation in all the internal spaces, uses natural materials that are pleasant to touch to create a stimulating tactile environment and unites the indoor and outdoor play areas.
